Electrophysiology - the study of the heart's electrical system - and research are key interests of Dr. Steven Bailin. By using special diagnostic equipment, he can determine the paths of electrical impulses that trigger each heartbeat.
Once that path has been determined, he can prescribe treatment to alleviate a racing heartbeat, or correct other irregular heart rhythms. Treatments include medications, ablation therapy (destroying the affected area in the heart) and the implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators.
Dr. Bailin, a native of Sioux Falls, SD, holds an undergraduate degree from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, and a medical degree from the University of Chicago. He then completed a residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison, followed by cardiology and electrophysiology fellowships at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Dr. Bailin joined Iowa Heart Center in 1991. He is board certified in cardiology, and currently practices at Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines.
