Be Sodium Savvy

Be sodium savvy

Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) should limit their intake of sodium (salt). Iowa Heart Center recommends 2,400-3,000 mg of sodium, or less, for CHF patients, and no more than 3,000 mg of sodium per day for healthy adults. Here are some basic tips to limit the amount of sodium in your diet. CHF patients should also see a dietician for advanced assistance in making dietary modifications.

Do’s

·        Take the salt shaker off the table. there is already enough salt in both natural and processed foods

·        Use low-salt seasonings such as allspice, chili powder, curry powder, dill, fennel, lemon, onion, pepper and vinegar. Use them sparingly

·        Substitute fresh vegetables and other low-sodium foods for processed or canned foods

·        Always read food labels – become a more alert consumer

·        Always check with your physician before using a “salt substitute” or “light salt.” These products often contain extra potassium that may or may not be appropriate for you

Don’ts

·        Avoid seasonings that taste salty, such as soy sauce

·        Avoid regular canned soups or broths. use low sodium soups

·        Avoid high-salt, processed meats such as bologna, bacon and ham. As an alternative, use 5-6 ounces of lean, fresh meat daily

·        Avoid seasonings and preservative containing sodium, such as MSG (monosodium glutamate)

·        Avoid bottled water – it often contains extra sodium

·        Avoid indigestion and headache remedies that contain sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate
