Getting a good night’s sleep
In addition to diet and exercise, getting a good night’s sleep is also important for heart failure patients. If you’re having trouble sleeping, here are a few hints to help make the nights more restful.
· Use pillows to prop up your head (makes breathing easier)
· Avoid eating a big meal just before going to bed
· Listen to relaxing music
· Drink warm herbal (non-caffeinated) tea
· Avoid exciting or suspenseful TV programs when sleep is interrupted during the night
· Avoid naps in the evening – they may disturb your ability to fall asleep when bedtime arrives
· Ask your physician about changing the time when you take your medications, particularly diuretics. a simple change may prevent the need for frequent urination during the night
